Education: University of Texas at Austin: bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering; Southern Methodist University: law degree

Experience: U.S. Army Reserve medic from 1970 to 1976; law clerk to federal district judge from 1976 to 1977; civil litigation attorney from 1976 to 1989; state district judge in Texas from 1989 to 2004; served on the Dallas County Juvenile Board from 1990 to 2001

What is the single most important action Congress can take to reduce gun violence?

Given that it is highly unlikely that we as a nation can come to a consensus as to what reasonable restrictions on firearms there should be, congressional action can be focused on creating a nationally accessible system which helps identify persons at risk of committing gun violence, along with funding greater varieties of resources to help the mentally ill.

What are the top three needs specific to the 5th Congressional District that you will make your priorities in Congress?

My top three priorities for CD 5 will be:

- A veterans' hospital in Colorado Springs;

- Increased federal highway funding for the Interstate 25 Gap; and

- Protection of public lands, including better monitoring and coordination with local communities of water and fire concerns

What do you bring to this race that none of your opponents can offer?

I have wealth of life experience, which is necessary for strong and capable leadership. I have no ego in this race. At 70, you need have no concern that I am undertaking a career in politics. I am a bold, moderate voice and I will be a Republican who will show some spine and sound the alarm even when it is politically risky to stand up for truth and for what is right.
