HOMER GLEN, Ill. - The 3-year-old son of a Fort Carson soldier died in an apparent drowning Sunday in a backyard pool in Chicago's south suburbs, authorities said.
The Daily Southtown reports (http://bit.ly/1a5sGfa ) the boy has been identified as Nathan Kackert of Colorado Springs. The boy died after he wandered away from his family's home in Homer Glen. His body was found a short time later in a nearby in-ground pool.
He was pronounced dead at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox.
Investigators say the boy's death appears to be an accident. Authorities believe a gate surrounding the pool may have been left open on Saturday evening.
The boy's grandfather, Don Kackert, told the Chicago Tribune in an email that Nathan's parents and 7-month old brother were visiting. Nathan's father, Staff Sgt. Shaun Kackert, who is stationed in Fort Carson, is scheduled to deploy to Afghanistan next year, Don Kackert told the newspaper.
"In hindsight, vision is always 20/20 and all of us will be haunted by 'what ifs' for the rest of our lives," Don Kackert said in the email. "Sometimes circumstances line up in ways that present tragic results. Now we only have fond memories of a sweet, young boy with no future."
