GREELEY — A 21-year-old Evans man who was shot by police during a confrontation in east Greeley has died.

Officers were called just after 1:30 a.m. Saturday after witnesses reported a man with a gun. Police say shots were fired, and the suspect, identified as Victor Hernandez, was hit. He died a short time later at a hospital.

No officers were hurt during the confrontation, and it's unclear how many shots were fired. Police have not said what led to the shooting.

The Greeley Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1q0GEat ) Hernandez had been arrested several times in the city. Most recently, he was arrested May 30 on charges of burglary, assault and violating a restraining order in connection with a domestic violence case.

The Greeley Police Department and the Weld County District Attorney's Office are investigating Saturday's shooting.
