GREENSBURG, Pa. (AP) — A southwestern Pennsylvania township planned to lift emergency road restrictions after PennDOT loaned it 100 tons of road salt to treat its roads.

Officials in Hempfield Township and South Greensburg borough had planned to ban travel on locally maintained roads into the weekend.

But Hempfield officials planned to lift the ban at 2 p.m. Friday. Southwest Greensburg also got a salt loan, but is keeping its ban in place until noon Saturday.

Exceptions were being made for people traveling to or from work, or medical appointments; school buses; emergency and government vehicles; and commercial vehicles providing supplies and services.

Officials with both communities say the influx of salt and a forecast calling for warmer temperatures led them to ease the restrictions, which also included lower speed limits.
