A deadly combination of speed and alcohol met Friday evening, killing a 33-year-old man riding a motorcycle on Union Boulevard, Colorado Springs police reported.

A second motorcyclist was killed several hours later in an unrelated incident in southeastern Colorado Springs when the driver struck a dump truck.

Neither alcohol nor speed played a factor in the second crash, the Colorado State Patrol reported.

The first crash occurred at about 7 p.m. when a motorcycle rider speeding south on Union hit the side of a Dodge Durango attempting to turn left across Union onto Collegiate. The motorcycle rider was thrown from the bike and pronounced dead at the scene, police reported. His name has not been released pending notification of his family.

The driver of the Dodge Durango, Jason Deal, 33, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, police reported. The investigation is ongoing.

At about 9:45 p.m. Spencer Shipley, of Colorado Springs was driving north on Powers Boulevard when a dump truck turned from a small side street onto Powers. Shipley, 29, hit the side of the truck and died on the scene, the report says. The driver of the truck Daniel Alfieri, 53, of Colorado Springs was not injured. The crash is still under investigation.
