A man may have tried to abduct two girls in north Colorado Springs on Tuesday but fled when the girls blew a whistle and began screaming for help, drawing the attention of eight to 10 other girls who ran to their aid, police said.

The girls, ages 10 and 3, were walking near Gracewood Drive and Basswood Drive in northern Colorado Springs when a man started walking behind them. The girls became scared, blew a whistle and started screaming loudly, police said. The man started to run at them but then drove off in a white van when a group of young girls heard the commotion and ran toward the girls.

"The victims in this case did a great job of identifying danger and taking action to alert others," police said.

"With the school year beginning this time of year, families and students are reminded to talk about and practice safety while playing or walking to and from school. There are online resources that are available from many reputable websites that provide recommended ways to talk with children about stranger danger," police said.
