One person was killed and another airlifted to the hospital after a fatal collision in eastern El Paso County Saturday morning.

State Patrol says the 88-year-old driver of a Honda Accord, Richard Alessi, was headed east on Highway 24 when he veered into the opposite lane and crashed into a guardrail. Alessi reportedly tried to right his vehicle and spun in front of an oncoming Dodge Ram pickup. The Honda spun across the road again after impact while the pickup hit the guardrail.

Alessi and a front seat passenger were both seriously hurt, and Alessi was flown to the hospital via Flight for Life. A woman sitting in the back seat was killed. She has been identified as Barbara Alessi. Troopers say everyone in the car was wearing a seat belt.

State Patrol says the Dodge driver only sustained minor injuries and was able to drive himself to the hospital.

The crash happened near the intersection with Blasingame, just south of Ramah. Alcohol, drugs and speed are not considered factors.
