A suspect in the slaying of an auto shop owner in Colorado Springs last week was arrested Monday morning in Minnesota.

A vehicle parked outside a Super 8 Hotel in Bloomington, Minn. - reportedly driven by suspect Derrick Davis, 59 - was spotted by the Minnesota State Patrol. Davis is accused of killing George Maldonado, 49, on Thursday at Full Throttle Auto Service, 305 N. Chelton Road.

Davis had checked in to the Super 8 hours earlier, police say. Two other adults with him were questioned and released; Davis was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder.

Two people were caught on videotape at Full Throttle, and police had sought help Friday in identifying them. But Monday, police spokesman Lt. Howard Black declined to say whether the suspect arrested was one of the men on the tape - or whether another suspect is being sought.

Police had obtained a warrant Saturday to arrest Davis, who has been a convicted criminal since 1994. Court records show he was sentenced for second-degree assault and possession of controlled substances, among other crimes.

Maldonado is survived by his wife, three sons, a daughter and two grandchildren.

Police say the men apparently used a green or blue Dodge Ram 1500 with extended cab, tinted windows and oxidation on the hood and roof. It might have custom rims and damage to the passenger side, police said, and its make could be from 1995 to 2001. No license tag number was provided.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Colorado Springs police at 444-7000. To remain anonymous and possibly receive a reward, call the Crime Stoppers Tip Line at 634-STOP (7867) or 1-800-222-8477.
